Avobenzone, also known as butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, is a widely used oil-soluble ultraviolet (UV) filter and is recognized as one of the most effective UVA absorbers in the cosmetic industry. It has a strong affinity for oil-based substances, which makes it easy to integrate into various oil-containing or oil-water emulsion formulations, and it is a core ingredient for achieving broad-spectrum sun protection.
In terms of its core characteristics, avobenzone is excellent at absorbing UVA rays, which are known to penetrate deeply into the skin’s dermis layer. Unlike UVB rays that mainly cause surface sunburn, UVA rays can damage collagen and elastin fibers over time, leading to premature skin aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging, as well as hyperpigmentation and dark spots. Avobenzone can capture and absorb these harmful UVA rays, converting the UV energy into harmless heat and preventing it from damaging the skin.
However, avobenzone has a certain limitation in photostability: when exposed to intense UV radiation for a long time, its molecular structure may degrade, reducing its sun protection efficacy. To solve this problem, it is usually compounded with other UV stabilizers or complementary UV filters (such as octocrylene, titanium dioxide) in sunscreen products. This compounding not only enhances its photostability but also expands the sun protection range to cover UVB rays, achieving comprehensive broad-spectrum protection.
Beyond dedicated sun care products like sunscreens and sun lotions, avobenzone is also added to a variety of daily cosmetic items with sun protection benefits, including moisturizing creams, BB creams, foundations, and lip balms. In these products, it not only provides daily UV protection for the skin but also helps stabilize other active skincare ingredients—many skincare components are prone to degradation under UV exposure, and avobenzone can reduce such damage, maintaining the activity of these ingredients and extending the shelf life of the products.
At the recommended usage concentration (up to 5% w/w in most regions’ cosmetic regulations), avobenzone is gentle and well-tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive skin, making it a popular choice for formulating mild sun protection products.
