Di-tert-butyl-p-cresol, commonly referred to as BHT, is a kind of widely used phenolic antioxidant with excellent thermal stability and compatibility. It is synthesized through the alkylation reaction of p-cresol and isobutylene, and the tert-butyl groups in its molecular structure give it strong antioxidant activity, making it effective in a variety of organic systems.
In terms of core functions, di-tert-butyl-p-cresol has two major application values. First, it serves as a high-efficiency antioxidant in the fields of lubricants, plastics, rubber and food. In lubricating oils, it can capture free radicals generated during the oxidation process of base oils, inhibit the chain reaction of oil oxidation, delay the formation of harmful substances such as sludge, colloid and acids, and thus extend the service life of lubricants and maintain the cleanliness of mechanical equipment. In plastics and rubber, it can prevent the materials from aging, embrittlement and discoloration caused by heat and oxygen during processing and use. In the food industry, it is used as a food additive to delay the oxidative deterioration of edible oils and fatty foods. Second, it has a certain metal deactivator effect when used together with other additives. It can form stable complexes with metal ions such as copper and iron, reducing the catalytic oxidation effect of metal ions on organic materials and further improving the anti-aging performance of the products.
