Ethyl Butylacetylaminopropionate, commonly known as BAAPE or IR3535, is a broad-spectrum, mild insect repellent widely used in personal care and outdoor protection products. It is synthesized through a series of organic reactions involving butylamine, acetic acid derivatives, and propionic acid esters, appearing as a colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid at room temperature with a faint, pleasant odor.
This compound is non-greasy, easily soluble in most cosmetic solvents and water-based formulations, and exhibits excellent thermal stability and sweat resistance. Unlike some traditional repellents, it has low skin penetration and minimal irritation, making it suitable for sensitive skin, children, and long-term outdoor use. Its core advantage lies in balancing high repellent efficacy with good material compatibility—it does not corrode plastics, fabrics, or painted surfaces, which expands its application scope significantly.
Efficient Insect RepellencyBAAPE works by interfering with the chemical sensory receptors on the antennae of blood-sucking insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, horseflies, and sandflies, blocking their ability to detect human body odors and carbon dioxide. It creates an invisible protective barrier on the skin surface, with no insecticidal effects, thus reducing the risk of insect-borne disease transmission.
Low Irritation and High SafetyIt has been tested and approved by international regulatory bodies for use in cosmetic-grade products. Its mild formula causes little to no redness, itching, or dryness on the skin, and is safe for infants over two months old when used at recommended concentrations. It also does not induce photosensitivity, meaning it can be used alongside sunscreen without increasing sunburn risk.
Excellent Stability and CompatibilityBAAPE maintains stable performance under a wide range of temperatures, from cold outdoor environments to hot, humid conditions. It does not hydrolyze easily in water-based formulations and blends well with most cosmetic ingredients, including moisturizers, emollients, surfactants, and sunscreens. It also has no adverse reactions with plastics or textiles, so it can be safely added to products packaged in plastic bottles or applied to clothing.
Long-lasting ProtectionThe duration of its repellent effect is concentration-dependent. At a 10% concentration, it provides 4–6 hours of continuous protection against mosquitoes; at 15%, the protection time extends to 8–10 hours, which meets the needs of daily commuting, camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities.
- Repellent Sprays and Lotions: BAAPE is the core active ingredient in portable repellent sprays and lotions. These products are designed for daily use, providing convenient protection for users during outdoor work or leisure activities. The lotion version is particularly suitable for dry skin, as it combines repellent function with moisturizing benefits.
- Children’s Repellent Products: Due to its low irritation, BAAPE is the preferred ingredient for children’s repellent creams and wipes. Formulated at concentrations below 10%, these products effectively repel insects without harming the delicate skin of kids.
- Multi-functional Personal Care Products: It is added to sunscreens, after-sun lotions, and body lotions to create 2-in-1 products that offer both sun protection and insect repellency, simplifying the outdoor skincare routine for users.
- Fabric and Gear Treatments: BAAPE can be formulated into repellent coatings for tents, sleeping bags, mosquito nets, and outdoor clothing. The coating adheres to the fabric fibers, providing long-lasting repellency even after multiple washes, which is essential for camping and fieldwork.
- Occupational Repellent Solutions: For workers in high-risk environments such as forestry, agriculture, oilfields, and epidemic prevention, BAAPE is used in high-concentration, long-acting repellent creams or aerosols. These products protect workers from bites by disease-carrying insects during extended outdoor operations.
Diluted BAAPE is incorporated into pet repellent sprays and collars to repel fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes from pets’ fur and skin. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs when used as directed, helping to prevent parasite infestations and related diseases.
Storage ConditionsStore BAAPE in a sealed container, placed in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid storing it with strong oxidants or alkaline substances, as this may cause decomposition and reduce its efficacy. The shelf life of unopened BAAPE is typically 2–3 years.
Usage Precautions
- Follow the recommended concentration range: 5%–15% for adult products, ≤10% for children’s products. Do not use undiluted BAAPE directly on the skin.
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and broken skin. If accidental contact occurs, rinse the affected area thoroughly with clean water for 15 minutes.
- Wash hands with soap after application, especially before eating or touching the face. Do not apply to clothing that comes into direct contact with the skin for extended periods without dilution.
