Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether, commonly referred to as MTBE, is a colorless, volatile liquid with a characteristic ether-like odor. It is a widely used gasoline additive, mainly produced through the reaction of methanol and isobutylene. MTBE has excellent solubility in gasoline and good blending stability, which allows it to mix uniformly with various gasoline components without stratification or precipitation under normal storage and use conditions.
Since the late 20th century, MTBE has gained popularity globally as a key octane booster for unleaded gasoline, replacing traditional lead-containing antiknock agents. However, in some regions such as California in the United States, its application has been restricted or phased out in recent years due to concerns over its potential to contaminate groundwater when gasoline leaks occur, as well as its relatively slow biodegradability in the environment. Despite these restrictions, MTBE still maintains a stable market demand in many countries and regions, especially in areas where gasoline quality upgrading is in progress.

Core Functions of MTBE

  1. Boost gasoline octane number efficientlyThis is the primary function of MTBE. Adding a certain proportion of MTBE to gasoline can significantly improve the gasoline's antiknock performance, effectively raising the research octane number (RON) and motor octane number (MON) of the fuel. This helps gasoline meet the quality standards of high-octane grades, prevents engine knocking during combustion, and protects the engine from damage caused by abnormal combustion.
  2. Improve fuel combustion efficiency and reduce emissionsMTBE has a high oxygen content. When blended into gasoline, it can promote more complete combustion of the fuel in the engine cylinder, reduce the formation of incomplete combustion products such as carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons, and thus help lower vehicle exhaust emissions. In addition, it can also reduce the generation of carbon deposits in the engine, maintaining the cleanliness of the fuel supply system and combustion chamber.
  3. Enhance gasoline blending flexibility for refineriesFor petroleum refineries, MTBE is a flexible and cost-effective blending component. It can be mixed with various base gasolines such as catalytic cracking gasoline and reformed gasoline. Refineries can adjust the blending ratio of MTBE according to the octane number of the base gasoline and the target product standards, without the need for large-scale modification of production equipment, which helps optimize the production process and reduce the overall cost of gasoline upgrading.
  4. Reduce the volatility of gasoline appropriatelyMTBE has a moderate vapor pressure, which can help adjust the Reid vapor pressure (RVP) of gasoline. This avoids excessive volatility of gasoline in high-temperature environments, reducing the evaporation loss of fuel during storage and transportation, and also alleviating the problem of vapor lock in the fuel supply system of vehicles under high-temperature conditions.
