Polyisobutylene is a type of non-polar, saturated synthetic elastomer produced through the cationic polymerization of isobutylene monomers. It is a versatile polymer with a linear molecular structure, exhibiting unique physical and chemical properties that make it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.

At room temperature, polyisobutylene typically exists as a viscous liquid or a rubber-like solid, depending on its molecular weight. Low-molecular-weight grades are clear, colorless, and highly viscous fluids, while high-molecular-weight grades are tough, flexible elastomers with good tensile strength. It is insoluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents such as hydrocarbons, oils, and chlorinated solvents.
Key properties of polyisobutylene include excellent chemical resistance to acids, alkalis, and oxidizing agents, outstanding weatherability and ozone resistance, good gas impermeability, and high elasticity at low temperatures. Notably, it has no unsaturated bonds in its molecular chain, which contributes to its superior stability compared with many other elastomers.

Core Applications

  1. Adhesive and Sealant IndustryPolyisobutylene is a critical component in the production of pressure-sensitive adhesives, hot-melt adhesives, and industrial sealants. Its high tackiness, flexibility, and resistance to moisture and aging make it ideal for formulating adhesives used in labels, tapes, and bonding applications. In sealants, it provides excellent sealing performance for construction joints, automotive components, and industrial equipment, preventing the leakage of gases and liquids.
  2. Automotive IndustryIn the automotive sector, polyisobutylene is widely used in the manufacturing of various parts and products. It is a key ingredient in engine oils and lubricant additives, where it improves the viscosity index of lubricants, ensuring stable lubrication performance across a wide temperature range. It is also used to produce automotive sealants, gaskets, and damping materials, helping to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels in vehicles. Additionally, it serves as a component in tire inner liners, leveraging its excellent gas barrier properties to reduce air permeability and extend tire service life.
  3. Pharmaceutical and Medical FieldsMedical-grade polyisobutylene is biocompatible and non-toxic, making it suitable for pharmaceutical and medical applications. It is commonly used as a coating material for tablets and capsules, providing a protective layer that controls the release rate of active pharmaceutical ingredients. It is also utilized in the production of medical devices such as catheters, syringes, and wound dressings, where its flexibility and chemical stability ensure safe and reliable performance.
  4. Industrial Rubber ProductsHigh-molecular-weight polyisobutylene is blended with other elastomers like natural rubber and butyl rubber to enhance their properties. The blended materials are used to produce rubber products such as hoses, belts, and gaskets, which require good resistance to chemicals, weathering, and ozone. It is also used in the manufacturing of rubber stoppers for industrial containers, providing an airtight and leak-proof seal.
  5. Personal Care and Household ProductsIn personal care products, low-molecular-weight polyisobutylene is used as a thickening agent and emollient in cosmetics, lotions, and lip balms. It helps to improve the texture and spreadability of products while providing long-lasting moisturization. In household products, it is a component of cleaning agents and polishes, enhancing their ability to adhere to surfaces and improving cleaning efficiency.
