1. Keratin Disulfide Bond ReductionThe thiol groups in MTG-ME break the disulfide cross-links in hair keratin, the structural protein that maintains hair shape. This allows the hair to be reshaped (curled or straightened) and then locked into the new style through a subsequent neutralization step that reforms the disulfide bonds.
2. Mild pH & Low IrritationUnlike the highly alkaline sodium thioglycolate, MTG-ME has a neutral pH range of 6–7, which significantly reduces scalp irritation and hair damage. It is particularly suitable for fine, fragile, or color-treated hair that is sensitive to harsh alkaline chemicals.
3. Formulation CompatibilityIt dissolves completely in water and blends well with non-ionic, anionic surfactants, thickeners, and hair conditioners commonly used in cream, lotion, or liquid styling products. A critical note is to avoid mixing it with strong oxidizers, as this will trigger redox reactions and reduce its effectiveness.
4. StabilityMTG-ME maintains stable performance under normal storage conditions. It decomposes in strong acidic environments or at high temperatures, which will cause it to lose its reducing activity. Typical commercial products have an active concentration of 83%–88%, a density of around 1.2 g/cm³, and a flash point of approximately 99.8°C.

Primary Applications

1. Hair Styling (Main Application Field)

• Permanent Wave SolutionsIt is the key active ingredient in cold perm lotions. When applied to hair wrapped on perm rods, it softens the hair shaft and breaks the original disulfide bonds, allowing hair to conform to the shape of the rods. After a set period, a neutralizer (usually hydrogen peroxide) is applied to reform the disulfide bonds, locking in the curly shape permanently. Its mild nature makes it ideal for all hair types, especially fine or color-treated hair that is prone to damage.
• Hair Relaxers/StraightenersUsed in mild relaxer creams, MTG-ME breaks the disulfide bonds in curly or wavy hair, enabling the hair to be combed straight. The neutralization step then fixes the straight style. It is a preferred choice for sensitive scalps or delicate hair that cannot tolerate the strong alkaline relaxers on the market.
• Depilatory ProductsThough less common than calcium thioglycolate, MTG-ME is occasionally added to mild depilatory creams. It weakens the hair structure by breaking keratin bonds, making unwanted hair easier to wipe off, and is suitable for formulations targeting sensitive skin areas.

2. Industrial & Specialty Uses

• Metal Surface TreatmentIts thiol groups have a strong affinity for heavy metal ions, so it can be used as a chelating agent in metal cleaning solutions. It effectively removes heavy metal contaminants from the surfaces of steel, copper, and aluminum, improving the adhesion of coatings and preventing metal corrosion.
• Textile ProcessingApplied in wool and silk processing, MTG-ME modifies the keratin-like fiber structure by breaking partial disulfide bonds, reducing the shrinkage of animal fiber fabrics and enhancing their dimensional stability to prevent felting during washing.
• Laboratory ReagentIt serves as a reducing agent in organic synthesis experiments, especially in reactions that require cleaving disulfide bonds in proteins or peptides, supporting pharmaceutical and biochemical research projects.

Handling & Storage Guidelines

1. StorageStore MTG-ME in a sealed, airtight container, placed in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area with a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and strong oxidizers. When stored properly, its shelf life is 12–24 months.
2. Safety PrecautionsDuring handling, wear nitrile gloves, safety goggles, and a dust/mist mask to avoid skin and eye contact or inhalation of vapor. If accidental contact occurs, rinse the affected area with plenty of water for 15 minutes. If ingested accidentally, do not induce vomiting and seek medical help immediately.
3. Formulation TipsFor optimal activity, formulate MTG-ME in a near-neutral to slightly alkaline system (pH 6–8). Pair it with hair care ingredients such as panthenol or keratin to minimize hair damage during styling. Do not mix it with oxidizers until the neutralization step in the hair styling process.
