Calcium Thioglycolate is the calcium salt derivative of thioglycolic acid, presenting as a white to slightly yellow crystalline powder with good water solubility. It has strong reducibility and higher chemical stability compared with thioglycolic acid monomer.
The core mechanism of its action lies in the sulfhydryl group (-SH) in its molecular structure, which can break the disulfide bonds in keratin. This unique property enables it to alter the structure of hair and keratinous substances, making it a widely used ingredient in multiple industrial and daily chemical fields.

Main Application Fields

  1. Daily Chemical Hair Removal Products (Core Application)It is the key active ingredient in mild depilatory creams and lotions. It can penetrate into the cortex of hair, break the disulfide bonds in hair keratin, and make the hair structure loose and fragile, thus achieving painless hair removal from the skin surface.
    Compared with sodium thioglycolate, calcium thioglycolate has lower skin irritation, making it more suitable for depilatory products designed for sensitive skin. Its typical addition concentration in such products ranges from 4% to 6%.
  2. Hair Care and Styling ProductsIt can be incorporated into hair straightening creams and hair relaxers to help break the disulfide bonds in hair keratin, enabling the hair to achieve a smooth and straight styling effect. Meanwhile, it reduces the irritation of the products to the scalp, and is usually compounded with mild conditioning ingredients such as lanolin and panthenol.
  3. Industrial Applications
    • Metal Surface Treatment: It serves as a metal rust remover and cleaner, which can effectively remove light oxide layers on the surface of metals such as copper and iron, improving the cleanliness of the metal surface.
    • Polymer Material Synthesis: As a polymerization regulator, it can control the molecular weight and molecular structure of polymers, so as to optimize the performance of polymer materials.

Safety Precautions

  1. This substance has mild skin irritation. Direct contact with high concentrations may cause skin redness and itching. In product formulation, soothing ingredients such as dipotassium glycyrrhizinate and allantoin should be added to reduce irritation.
  2. It is strictly prohibited to store or use it together with strong oxidants (such as hydrogen peroxide and chlorate), otherwise chemical reactions may occur and toxic and harmful gases may be generated.
  3. During production or formulation, wear nitrile gloves and goggles to avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. If it accidentally gets into the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water for more than 15 minutes and seek medical advice in time.
