CATC TA100 is a widely used double long-chain cationic surfactant belonging to the quaternary ammonium salt family, with distearyldimethylammonium chloride (DODMAC) as its core active component and a standard CAS number of 107-64-2. Its molecular structure features symmetric 18-carbon alkyl chains attached to a quaternary ammonium cation center, giving it a unique combination of surface activity and functional properties. Under normal conditions, it presents as a white to off-white waxy solid or fine powder, with excellent solubility in hot water and ethanol—forming stable solutions or emulsions—and dispersibility in cold water.
This surfactant stands out for its compatibility with non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants, making it versatile in formulation development. However, direct mixing with anionic surfactants must be avoided, as this triggers ionic reactions leading to precipitation and significant loss of efficacy. Its balanced molecular design integrates strong adsorption, softening, emulsification, and antibacterial capabilities, establishing it as a key ingredient in textiles, daily chemicals, and industrial emulsification processes.

Core Properties

  1. Strong Cationic AdsorptivityThe positively charged quaternary ammonium groups in CATC TA100 exhibit high affinity for negatively charged substrates such as natural fibers, synthetic fibers, hair cuticles, and skin surfaces. This binding forms a uniform, durable hydrophobic protective film that resists rinsing, enabling long-lasting functional effects.
  2. Superior Softening and Antistatic PerformanceThe dual 18-carbon alkyl chains orient themselves parallel to substrate surfaces, significantly reducing friction between fibers or hair strands. This not only enhances softness and smoothness but also neutralizes static charges, minimizing issues like fabric pilling, hair frizz, and dust adsorption.
  3. Efficient Emulsification and DispersionBy lowering oil-water interfacial tension, CATC TA100 stabilizes both oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions, with particular efficacy for mineral oils, vegetable oils, and silicone oils. It also disperses pigment particles and solid fillers evenly, preventing agglomeration and ensuring formulation uniformity.
  4. Broad-Spectrum Antibacterial ActivityThe cationic groups disrupt microbial cell membrane permeability, inhibiting the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This antibacterial effect is long-lasting, making it suitable for hygiene-focused products and preservation applications.
  5. Reliable Chemical StabilityCATC TA100 maintains consistent performance in acidic and neutral systems and demonstrates good heat resistance during processing. However, its quaternary ammonium groups may hydrolyze in strongly alkaline environments, resulting in reduced activity.

Main Application Fields

1. Textile and Dyeing Industry

As a benchmark ingredient in textile finishing, CATC TA100 is widely used for cotton, linen, wool, and synthetic fiber fabrics. When applied as a softening agent, it imparts a full, fluffy hand feel and durable antistatic properties, enhancing fabric drapability and wear comfort. Typical addition levels range from 1.0% to 3.0% based on fabric weight. It also functions as a dye-fixing aid for direct and acid dyes, where its cationic groups bond with anionic dye molecules to improve color fastness to washing and rubbing, reducing fading. In synthetic fiber spinning, it acts as an antistatic agent to prevent fiber entanglement and improve processing efficiency.

2. Daily Chemical Industry

In hair care products such as conditioners, hair masks, and leave-in treatments, CATC TA100 adsorbs onto damaged cuticles to smooth scales, reduce tangling, and restore luster—especially effective for dry or chemically treated (perm/colored) hair, with recommended dosages of 0.5% to 2.0%. In skin care formulations like moisturizing lotions and body creams, it emulsifies oily emollients and forms a moisture-locking film, while its antibacterial properties suit products for oily or acne-prone skin (addition levels 0.1% to 1.0%). It is also a key component in laundry fabric softeners, delivering post-wash softness and static control.

3. Industrial Emulsification and Auxiliary Applications

In road construction, CATC TA100 serves as a cationic asphalt emulsifier, improving asphalt adhesion to aggregates and enhancing pavement strength and water resistance. It stabilizes paraffin and resin emulsions for wood preservation and metal processing, ensuring uniform coating and protection. In pesticide formulations and water-based coatings, it acts as a dispersant and stabilizer, improving the suspension of active ingredients and pigments for consistent product performance.

Storage and Usage Notes

  • Storage Conditions: Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area with temperatures not exceeding 40°C. Store in sealed containers to prevent moisture absorption, which can cause caking. Avoid direct sunlight and proximity to strong oxidants or anionic surfactants.
  • Dissolution Guidelines: For optimal solubility, heat CATC TA100 to 50–60°C and add slowly to stirred hot water or ethanol. Direct addition to cold water should be avoided to prevent clumping.
  • Safety Precautions: Industrial-grade products may cause skin or eye irritation. Wear protective gloves and goggles during handling. In case of skin contact, rinse with soap and water; for eye exposure, flush thoroughly with water and seek medical attention if irritation persists.
  • Environmental Compliance: Dispose of waste material in accordance with local regulations. Avoid direct discharge into water bodies, as it exhibits aquatic toxicity.
